DEATH OF AN ABERAVON EX-POST MASTER. On Wednesday evening last, Mr John Davies, who had for a great many years carried on a large drapery and hosiery business in Aberavon, succumbed to a protracted and severe illness at the age of 58. Mr. Davies first came to Aberavon when only 12 years old, and worked as an assistant to his uncle, the late Mr. James Davies, draper. After some years, Mr. Davies entered into business at the Old Company Shop, Aberavon, as a draper and hosier, and also became postmaster of the town about the same time. As trade flourished, it necessitated an enlargement of his premises and extensive alterations were made on a very large scale which included the building of the present Arcade Buildings, and of his own premises, the name of which he changed to Post Office buildings, and which occupied the .most commanding position in the town. It was only a few months ago he retired from business and from the postmastership, after holding the latter position for upwards of 38 years. Deceased leaves a widow and four grown-up children to mourn their loss. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1901 Census shows her, aged 36, married to Daniel Parker, bricklayer, aged 67, following death of her former husband, James Hannam, in 1890.  She is still living in Sholing, in Middle Road, Mill Terrace.  Living with her she has her 2 younger sons, James, 12 and Harry CW, 9 (she must have been pregnant with him when James died), by James, and her youngest daughter Dora M Hannam, aged 5 (work that out - James had been dead for 5 years when Dora was born in 2Q1896).   The census records Dora as Daniel's stepdaughter, so presumably she is not his child.  Meanwhile her elder sons William (my ancestor), 15, and Edward, 14, are living with their grandfather, James Edward (or Edward James) Hannam, nearby.  She also has a son, Daniel G Parker, aged 3, by Daniel senior, who was 64 years old at the time.  RG13/1063 f73.
